A New Way to Get More Living Out of Life.

Dr Maltz wrote a pile of books in the early 1960s centred round his theory of psycho-cybernetics. Basically, it's about how we construct our own self-image, and then adhere to the parameters of that self-image, even if it's overly restrictive or downright wrong. He maintains that to improve their lives people need only reconstruct their view of themselves along the lines of whom and what they want to be. In a nutshell, before people can change, they must see themselves differently.

He's right, of course, and his books make for fascinating reading from the point of view of a plastic surgeon looking at human psychology. His explanation of the human body as, “an automatic goal-seeking machine which steers its way to a target or goal by use of feedback data and stored information, automatically correcting its course when necessary,” is pretty mind-numbing. He means to remind us that we're programmed to succeed, no matter what the goal. We just have to focus on a more worthy target.

You may have heard his theory explained elsewhere as being evidence of the Reticular Activation System (RAS). This is the function of an area in the brain that alerts us when it receives input relating to our goals. For example, you want to buy a new car of a particular brand and colour. Suddenly, you see them everywhere. This is your RAS working for you – powerful stuff when you harness it.

The writing style is quaintly male-centric, in keeping with its vintage. However, he enthusiastically tells interesting, illustrative stories that support his theories. Dr Maltz asserts, “It doesn't matter how many times you have failed in the past. What matters is the successful attempt, which should be remembered, reinforced, and dwelt upon.” Go, Max!
