Book Reviews

The books reviewed here are an eclectic mix of the self-help genre. Some are very practical, some psychological, some more spiritually inclined. They will not appeal to everyone's taste, but you may find one or two that are just what you need to read in your current circumstances.

The reviews are entirely my personal opinion – I've read them all and taken at least one nugget of wisdom from each. I hope you find something that inspires.

Ask and It Is Given: Learning to Manifest Your Desires. Esther and Jerry Hicks (the teachings of Abraham).

The Hicks are in a class of their own, writing with spirit-powered insight into how we mere mortals can learn to manifest our every true desire on this fabulous earth-plane. “You get what you think about, whether you want it or not,” is the main message of this book.

The authors include an Emotional Guidance Scale so you can see where you are, vibrationally. The theory is, where you are emotionally (your Emotional Set Point) indicates the kind of reality you are experiencing. Because you are a vibrational transmitter and receiver, shifting your feelings up a few notches will change your reality. The authors offer 22 processes whereby you may achieve that shift.

The processes are creative and fun – there's bound to be something here for you. I've passed some of this information on to friends who've found it as intriguing and mind-expanding as I have.

This is a delicious book, full of tasty morsels that you can get your teeth into and do for yourself. The style is gentle and informative – lots of loving, non-judgemental prodding to help you realise just how powerful you really are.

The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent: Living the Art of Allowing. Esther and Jerry Hicks (the teachings of Abraham).

“Ninety-nine percent of every creation is complete before you see any evidence of it – you are literally thinking your life into being.” This book allows the Hicks to follow up Ask & it is given with suggestions as to how to overcome negative thinking and attitudes, to deliberately align ourselves with our Source and create our own reality.

They explain your Emotional Guidance System which indicates the relationship between your thinking self and inner self. This system gives you guidance regarding the vibrational relationship between where you are and where you want to be, indicating what you are on the brink of manifesting. They suggest how you might change your vibrational relativity to your physical body, home, work relationships, money and societal surroundings.

The authors explain that you compare and contrast to gain information about what you do and don't want, and offer ten processes to lift your vibration to manifest more desirable outcomes. They show how you can apply the moving-up-the-Emotional-Guidance-Scale process to eliminate the perception of powerlessness and create better circumstances

The writing style is thorough, occasionally repetitive, but always forthright. “Your life is really about the 99 percent of creation that happens before manifestation” - I find this statement exciting and empowering. Towards the end of the book there is a transcript of a Q&A session with Abraham that most would enjoy.

Awaken the Giant Within : How to Take Immediate Control of Your Mental, Emotional, Physical and Financial Destiny! Anthony Robbins.

Charismatic, talented and passionate, Tony Robbins impresses as a great coach and genuinely inspiring individual.  He’s crammed this book with chapter after chapter (over 500 pages) of practical advice and techniques for changing your beliefs, behaviour and results.  The centre-piece is his Neuro-Associative Conditioning program that he recommends to change just about anything in your life – “six steps that are specifically designed to change behaviour by breaking patterns that disempower you.”  Just doing these steps would be enough to create significant change.

He’s a great believer in making consistent decisions based on beliefs firmly mired in our own set of standards - who we want to be and how we want to live our lives.  Most importantly, we decide what we focus on, what things mean, and what to do to see the results of our decisions - “Know that it’s your decisions, and not your conditions, that determine your destiny.”

Tony blends psychological techniques with neuro-linguistic programming to produce a raft of tools for change – there’s a huge amount of information inside - something for everyone. Along with Unlimited Power, this invaluable text remains a Tony Robbins classic.

Change Your Life in Seven Days: The World's Leading Hypnotist Shows You How. Paul McKenna .

Now here's a man with a mission – his mission is to HELP YOU! Paul McKenna (featured on TV) is an expert therapist trained in hypnotherapy and neuro-linguistic programming. This guy is wildly enthusiastic, highly knowledgeable about what influences human behaviour and very clever to boot – he's a class act.

Worth every cent, this book points you in the right direction, gets you to work through your obstacles and trains you to be optimistic and motivated with the help of the ‘free mind programming CD' that comes with the book. Rocket-fuel for your goal seeking/achieving, self-help books don't come much better than this… can't think of one, myself.

He takes you through a theoretical seven day process – it actually took me two weeks as the material is quite dense and requires you to complete written exercises. But they are inspiring, constructive and revealing. His first sentence is, “You hold in your hands a book that has the power to change your life forever.” Personally, I can vouch for that.

If you're thinking, ‘I wish I had a fabulous life without actually having to do anything,' then don't bother with this book – it'll just annoy you.

Core Transformation: Reaching the Wellspring Within. Connirae and Tamara Andreas.

A psycho-spiritual approach to becoming healthy and whole, this book expounds the core transformation process. The idea is that most of us have parts (other aspects / sides / faces) that we stepped out of years ago because we didn't want them or were ashamed of them. “One way to think about inner parts is that when we were young we separated or ‘split off' a part of ourselves in a time of crisis, judgement or criticism. Once a part splits off, it tends to persist in the behaviours it chose then, doesn't have access to what we later learn, and in a sense remains frozen in time.” The core transformation process is about recognising and reintegrating those parts.

What's so interesting about this process? The unintegrated parts of us can wreak havoc in our maturity. They try to protect us from pain in myriad ways, thus unwittingly preventing us from doing or even attempting many things that would let us feel fulfilled and happy. I was relieved to understand that the self-sabotaging bits of me were really trying to look after me. The authors have perfected a process of acknowledging the concerns of your errant parts and bringing them forward into maturity.

Essentially, this process is a therapy used to heal all sorts of life issues. You can do-it-yourself from this book quite effectively – very valuable for us conflicted individuals who want to fix ourselves at our own pace.

Cosmic ordering guide (+ Cosmic ordering connection CD).Stephen Richards.

Books on cosmic ordering have become fashionable, unfortunately. A number of titles of questionable value have proliferated in bookshops, recently. What's all the fuss about? Theoretically, you ask ‘the Cosmos' for what you want and you will get it.

Unsurprisingly, there's a whole lot more going on besides asking for something and naively believing it will miraculously materialise. Stephen Richards explains the complexities of the order / receive dynamic – no mean feat. United Field Theory is the basis of cosmic ordering. When you get your head around that, you've got the idea. Stephen Richards does a fine job of explaining it, plus things like brainwaves, the function of your pineal gland and how to go about making a ‘cosmic connection.'

Better known as a crime writer, the author shows a compelling sincerity by narrating details of his poverty-stricken background. Subsequently trained as a clinical hypnotherapist, his book also offers self-hypnosis scripts to enable making your own ‘cosmic connection'. He includes all sorts of snippets of information, from tales of the Mayans to inspiring wins at the races!

I chose to purchase his CD “Cosmic ordering connection”, a hypnosis recording that does all the work for you. As a bonus, he has a soothing voice with a delightful Geordie accent.

Cosmic Ordering: The Next Adventure Barbel Mohr .

A companion to her earlier work, The Cosmic Ordering Service , this book contains Barbel Mohr's 'deeper illumination' of cosmic ordering techniques. It contains success stories, strategies, and recipes for creating your desired reality. She asserts that everyone can order what they want from an invisible authority (the Cosmic Ordering Service) via a kind of spiritual telephone and enjoy the manifestation of their desires. She includes advice on how to approach this process for the most desirable outcome - "talk to the universe as you would to a friend... speak in such a way as makes you feel powerful... use humour and have fun... radiate bliss and demand a lot of it - enough for the entire world!"

Her approach is matter-of-fact and irreverent. For example, you might choose to create a full-blown ritual complete with incense, chanting and the ringing of bells when making your requests to the Cosmos - Barbel suggest that cosmic orders made in the bathroom are equally as effective - whatever works for you. She believes in being honest and genuine with yourself and others and asserts that appreciating yourself and making the most of your life has a flow on affect to others: -" You cannot give what you do not have... you must have luck and joy in order to give it to others... simplify your life with one all-encompassing order - order a personal Paradise on Earth!" Above all, she believes we all have power courtesy of the Cosmos to have our wishes fulfilled- we just have to ask the right way - " If I, a completely average lunatic, can give orders to the universe without end and thereby receive so many improbable things, then YOU can, too!"

Barbel touches on some loosely related, personal interest subjects such as karma, enlightenment, reverse speech and bretharianism that add a lively quirkiness to her commentary. Being translated from her German vernacular, some of the phrasing is quite startling and amusing. Her stories and personal perspective on the various aspects of cosmic ordering make for an interesting, enjoyable and insightful take on this fascinating subject.

The Divine Matrix: Bridging Time, Space, Miracles, and Belief Gregg Braden.

Gregg Braden explains, “The Divine Matrix is the container that holds the universe, the bridge between all things, and the mirror that shows us what we have created.”  The book is divided into three parts, the first of which discusses 20th century energy field experiments, their implications, and possible conclusions that we can draw from them.  The second part delves into how we can engage the energy field using the ‘language’ of powerful emotion; while the third part shows us how we might build a dialogue by interacting with the energy within and around us all.  At the very end, he sums up the ’20 keys of conscious creation’ that he has expanded upon, sequentially, through the text.

There are all sorts of twists and turns, and tricks and traps in creating our own reality. Many of the points need reading and re-reading, for there are some critical pieces of information here that make all the difference. For instance, he reminds us that, to manifest a particular goal or ‘thing’, we will have more success if we take our perspective from the goal, rather than as if we are working towards the goal.

Set in a conversational style, Gregg Braden wants “to offer a sense of hope, possibility, and empowerment in a world that often makes us feel small, ineffective and helpless.”   I found this book to be so well written as to make the whole quantum physics/unified field theory morass, perfectly understandable.  Look, this is good stuff - if you seriously want to get your head around how our universe works, then give this author’s version a go.

Do One Thing Different: And Other Uncommonly Sensible Solutions To Life's Persistent Problems. Bill O’Hanlon.

By explaining how changing just one element of a problem can shift its dynamic power, Bill O’Hanlon opens up all sorts of possibilities for us.  He questions the benefit of traditional psychological strategies to deal with problems - “Explanations often give us an illusion of help by enabling us to understand why we have a problem but not giving us any concrete ways to solve it.” This book gives ten keys to the solution oriented approach to solving problems.

Solution oriented therapy highlights what is right with you, what has helped in the past, and what you can do now to change things.  It moves past analysis to problem-solving actions.  The author explains how to break patterns, find solutions, change your thinking, shift your attention, focus on what works, open up to possibilities, re-write your future and rise above your old limiting beliefs.

“Explanations are a booby prize.”  You could waste years analysing why you are the way you are, without getting any happier.  When problems seem overwhelming doing just one thing differently, i.e. making a small change, can break a pattern which then has a flow-on effect to other areas of your life.  This is a very powerful technique that really does bring about lasting change.  Try it for yourself.

Don't Bitch, Just Get Rich Toney Fitzgerald.

Toney Fitzgerald engages the reader as observer of seven people doing a 'how to make money' course with him. We meet his clients, listen to their struggles and witness moments of self revelation as they overcome inertia and achieve positive change.

According to Toney, people bitch and lie about their lives, repeatedly reinforcing how life sucks, thereby enslaving themselves to unalterable fictional poverty scripts - an attitude of 'let's not let the facts get in the way of good story.' He states , "You are going to learn how to stop bitching about not getting what you want out of life and start getting it." The key to doing that is embracing the liberating fact as opposed to the enslaving story.

The author explains Choice Gaps - the time between a stimulus and an action where we have time to think before we make a decision and act. "Do or do not in split seconds. It takes a split second to throw yourself off a cliff, blow your dough, break a promise. or not." He encourages us to take back our power to think and choose how we want our lives to be. Other concepts explained are Metanoia (the departure point from your old self) , the Bitch Matrix versus the Rich Matrix, Zero Option Strategies, and the Rulebook of the Rich .

The foundation of this book is the disconcerting truth that our promises to ourselves have no power, unless we give it to them. When we make an empowering unbreakable promise to ourselves, then there can be no backsliding, no ifs, buts, or compromises, no blaming others - " If you are true to your word, you will get what you want: an Unbreakable Promise makes an unstoppable person.'"

Toney Fitzgerald is an Australian lifestyle coach who has produced an eye-opening, apathy breaking, engaging read which places us in the shoes of his clients who he prefers not to coddle. We're allowed to watch their journeys and learn for ourselves.

The Dynamic Laws of Prosperity Catherine Ponder.

What a great name for an author on the subject of metaphysics!  Catherine Ponder wrote at least a dozen books first published in the early 1960s.  A Unity minister, she asserts that, “Poverty is a sin - it’s unspiritual and the result of poverty thinking.”

The word ‘prosper’ means ‘to flourish, succeed, thrive; to experience favourable results,’ and the author believes there are laws (principles) we can follow that lead to riches.  Just a few of these prosperity laws are the creative law, the vacuum law, the imaging law, the laws of increase, prayers, self-confidence, and persistence.  Each law is thoroughly described and illustrated with stories and examples of its power in action.

When you’re musing on the best way to phrase a decree or affirmation, look to Catherine Ponder’s work – she’s an absolute expert.  There’s plenty of information in this 400-pager, typical of her now classic texts.  Open any page, read a story, get inspired and find the right words that guide you to prosperity.

Eat That Frog!: 21 Great Ways to Stop Procrastinating and Get More Done in Less Time (BK Life). Brian Tracy.

Brian Tracy is a well published author of time management and business success titles. Eat That Frog! is a small book packed with ideas inciting you to get organised and get cracking! The natty title derives from the notion of doing the ickiest (often the most crucial) task first, then the rest become easy.

He explains some basic time management rules that we all need reminding of:- make lists, prioritise, set deadlines, make a plan, take action (any action), do something everyday towards your goal. He explores plenty of techniques including slice ‘n dice, chunking down and classifying tasks - particularly, do the most difficult one first, otherwise known as Eat that frog!

Refreshingly brief and practical, this is very handy for those challenging moments when you need some inspiration to get your ducks in a row.

I Can Make You Rich (UK Hardcover) Paul McKenna.

Before you gag on the excessive materialism of the title, here’s Paul’s definition of ‘rich’: “Being rich is living your life on your own terms – according to your possibilities, not your limitations.”  The object of the exercise is to teach you a system to make you truly wealthy, in all aspects of your life.

This book is divided into two sections.  The first part deals with the psychology of money, helping you to learn how to change your thoughts about money and to think like a rich person.  The second is practical information so that you can actively make money for yourself.  This includes working out what product or service will make you money, enlisting support from backers and staff, preparing a business plan, and three critical skills that lead to becoming rich.  Questions and workbook-style exercises are interspersed with information and instructions to get you thinking and planning.

Paul McKenna reminds us that, “Making money is just a skill, but becoming rich is an art.”   He uses NLP and EFT techniques to lock in changes in your thinking as you progress through the book . He includes a free hypnosis CD that you can use daily to imprint your new rich approach into your subconscious, permanently.

I cannot speak highly enough of this very talented man.  He puts every ounce of his considerable knowledge into his books and recordings.  This is no exception – excellent value, loads of information, cleverly effective techniques and vast enthusiasm.  Go get it!

The Intention Experiment: Using Your Thoughts to Change Your Life and the World   Lynne McTaggart.

If you’re looking for substance behind the premise that what you think influences your reality, then this book will provide some satisfaction.  Lynne McTaggart provides numerous examples of how bona fide scientists have studied and tested the power of human intention to change the world.

The experiments examined here touch on a variety of subjects including quantum physics, particle theory, unified field theory, ESP, prayer, healing, and positive and negative intention.  The larger part of this book narrates all the experimental evidence the author considers appropriate.  This is well-presented and surprisingly easy to read – not deadly dull and dryly scientific as you might expect.  All the relevant information is here: the purpose of each experiment, who conducted it, what they expected to find, how it was carried out, the actual results and conclusions, including those not always supportive of the author’s argument.

The results are frequently exciting in their implications.  Did you know the heart has a slightly faster reaction time than the brain in precognition tests?  In fact, the evidence suggests it actually sends additional information to the brain for processing – ‘’the heart may hold the largest antenna.”  And that we pick up other people’s emotions through our intestines? – “the home of the gut instinct is indeed the gut itself.

The last couple of chapters cover firstly, a blueprint for using intention effectively in your own life and secondly, a series of personal and group experiments.  You are invited to be part of worldwide intention experiments, providing you are passionately interested and committed.

Often, the explanations are quite detailed.  The author is to be applauded for putting together so much information in such a digestible way.  She states: “The observer effect in quantum experimentation... suggests not only that the observer brings the observed into being, but also that nothing in the universe exists as an actual ‘thing’ independently of our perception of it.”   Read the evidence, construct an intention programme and draw your own conclusions.
