Law of Attraction: The Science of Attracting More of What You Want and Less of What You Don't. Michael J. Losier.
This is IT - the quintessential 'How To' manifestation book. Michael Losier removes all the mystery, the 'woo-woo' factor, from attracting whatever you want into your life. This is an unapologetic cookbook approach, a step-by-step guide to going about establishing what it is you want, setting up the right 'vibe' so that it can happen, then allowing it to turn up.
Yes, it's all been said before in umpteen different ways. But what's special about Losier's work is a raft of clever and effective strategies to get you, the Manifester, to step out of your own way and allow your desired outcomes to appear. The least understood factor in manifestation is allowing - the author provides ten tools to make it simple.
This slim book (142p) is packed with essential information devoid of padding, and none the poorer for it. He provides worksheets to help you focus, tools in plain English and various tips to guide you through. If you want to stick to the facts and just get on with it, this is perfect for you - highly recommended!

The Little Money Bible . Stuart Wilde.
This more recent offering of Stuart Wilde's is a mature look at how to get more abundance, in its myriad forms, into our lives. He rejects the vilification of money as ‘the root of all evil' and reminds us that - “Money is just a symbol of the infinite goodness, the compassion that gave us life.”
He explains in ten separate chapters the laws of abundance, flow, money & distance, supply & demand, concentration & wave-particle duality, invocation & manifestation, ego, giving & receiving, honour & integrity, and love & compassion. Throughout, he suggests techniques to raise your awareness of money, things you can do to make it an integral part of your life.
He's very clear that we can be both wealthy and spiritual at the same time. He also insists that we then have a responsibility to be benevolent and generous to those less fortunate. There's lots to take away from this little book packed full of astute advice.

Live Your Dreams... Let Reality Catch Up: NLP and Common Sense for Coaches, Managers and You .
Roger Ellerton.
This book helps you discover who you are and what really
motivates you through Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP. It
provides a life manual and a tool-kit for
self-transformation based on the premise that your thoughts
and actions in the present create your future.
NLP is a process of discovering and subsequently changing
patterns, habits, strategies and mental programs that
control everything you do. The author explains the basics
of NLP to give you an understanding of how you communicate
with yourself and others. He discusses how we make internal
representations, maintain beliefs, make decisions and use
language to filter information. Also, we have a set of
pre-suppositions (beliefs) about ourselves and the world we
live in which directly influences our behaviour.
Roger Ellerton asks you to identify whether you are living
your life at cause or effect, that is, active creation and
self-responsibility or attributing circumstances to the
influence of others. Are you creating the life you want or
are you a helpless victim? NLP can help you take charge.
Chapter titles include: Getting to know yourself and
others, Improving your communication, Making personal
improvements, Freeing yourself from the past, Achieving what
you want in life, and Making a difference in business.
This is a well-written text that explains NLP clearly and
provides a raft of exercises and methods to re-program
yourself. While that sounds a tad clinical, the techniques
are quite clever, creative and interesting. There’s plenty
of new tricks to learn and much for you to do here. Also,
there’s a ‘representational systems preference test’
included at the back so you can determine whether you prefer
to use visual, auditory, kinaesthetic or auditory/digital
modes of communication.
Love the life you live: ten steps for happier living – a life coaching process. Anne Hartley.
Anne Hartley is my life coaching teacher who brings a wealth of experience and practical wisdom to this business of living. She understands a good deal about invisible energy, be it computers, radio waves, or thoughts. Our personal vibration is a powerful magnet to all that we are imagining, good and bad. “We can't control what thoughts pop into our mind, but we can control what we choose to dwell on.”
She experimented with and developed this Ten Step process that takes you through examining your rules and beliefs that keep you where you don't want to be. Then she helps you work out what makes you happy, what it is you value and who you want to be. From there, she encourages you to create your life with your thoughts, words and actions.
Along the way, she has provided lots of tactical suggestions, reminders and plans to inspire, keep you on track and get you back on track, should you need it. Each chapter ends with ‘tips for living a happier life' - thoughtful pointers to make your life work better for you.
Lots and lots of wise words, here. Anne is generous with her knowledge and experience - take a hint and read her book. Better still, ask me to coach you though the Ten Step process, personally!

Loving Relationships .
Sondra Ray.
What new can I say about this classic? Essentially it's about your beliefs and patterns of behaviour and how they impact your relationships.
Sondra Ray puts the responsibility entirely on you – “the mistake people make is forgetting that their thoughts produce results all the time.” She a strong advocate of affirmations, recommending you write them out interspersed with objections until resistance disappears – quite an effective process.
She wants you to love yourself, love your body, handle anger and suppressed negativity, tell the truth faster, clear up your destructive relationship patterns, give up guilt, get clear on God, money and sex, treat others with kindness, and surrender to life.
“Love brings up anything unlike itself.” “Love always heals… if you let it.”
I think this book is still one of the best fast track reads to righting your relationship with everything that's meaningful in life.

Manifest Your Destiny: The Nine Spiritual Principles for Getting Everything You Want .
Wayne Dyer.
Dr Dyer needs no introduction given his prodigious output of
self-development books, all with a spiritual bent - this
title is no exception. While his recent books tend to
re-hash his earlier works, this one retains its freshness -
an oldie but a goodie. He intends for you to read this as a
handbook and then apply his nine principles for spiritual
manifestation immediately.
"When you know that you are responsible for how you chose
to react to every life situation, and that you are
essentially alone within yourself at all moments, then you
can very privately put out into the Universe that which you
want to bring to yourself."
If you disagree with his basic premise -'your destiny is to
become a co-creator with God', then this book is not for
you. Accepting this premise, the nine principles are:
Becoming aware of your higher self, Trusting the Universe,
You are inseparable from all that is, You attract what you
desire, Honouring your worthiness to receive, Connecting
with unconditional love, Meditation, Detachment, and
Cultivating an attitude of gratitude.
Wayne Dyer is big on 'love', affirmations, visualisation and
meditation. He borrows from a variety of religious
teachings to make his case, while incorporating some moving
pieces of poetry. Despite some contradictory messages
(desire motivates / desire is just ego), his arguments are
robust and his style connects with his audience. His
discussion on self-honesty, self-acceptance and self-worth
easily justifies the price of the whole book.
According to
Dr Dyer, "manifesting is not about making demands
of the Universe - it is a cooperative venture in which your
intention is aligned with divine intelligence." His
cookbook approach simplifies the ways you can
cooperate. The Universe awaits you.

Miracles . Stuart Wilde.
In this book Stuart Wilde de-mystifies one of life's mysteries – “why am I here?” The answer is painfully simple – to have fun. And if you're not having fun, then you've misunderstood your own immense power as a miracle maker.
This slim (38 pages) publication explains the metaphysics of universal law – “to understand miracles we have to look at two aspects of Universal Law. Firstly, there lies deep within all mankind an immense power and, secondly, the power is impartial and unemotional.” Other chapter titles: understanding life's mission, understanding the nature of beliefs, the miracle ‘action plan', understanding energy, understanding time, and understanding your personal power.
The most useful point I gleaned was the Universe doesn't give a toss whether you have something or not – you don't have to be ‘good' or deserving. It's up to you to choose what you want and then to be ready and willing to receive it.
Stuart Wilde has written numerous books including The force, The quickening, and The trick to money is having some. I think Miracles is the best of them, but you may enjoy his others.

Natural Born Winners: How to Achieve Happiness and Personal Fulfilment . Robin Sieger.
Robin Sieger writes with insight about the ‘when, where, why, and how' of becoming successful. His first requirement is, ‘don't just do something, sit there', that is, think about the quality of your life and where it's going. He maintains that what distinguishes long-term winners is the way they think and their attitude, while reminding us that these are the only two things in life over which everyone has absolute control.
These are his natural principles for success: a clear goal, a definite plan, self-confidence, unshakeable belief in success, and persistence. The main body of the book expounds these principles. Towards the end, he discusses self-image and creating a mental movie of your desired life, effectively a creative visualisation / self-hypnosis technique.
This is a thorough and well-written work – quite inspiring and full of thought provoking quotes and comprehensive explanations. It's certainly one of the better self-help books around – he's put in everything you need to know – highly recommended.

The Power of Subconscious Goal Setting.
Scott Groves.
A
study on goals begun in 1953 found that 3% of that year's
Yale graduates had written specific goals. Twenty years
later, those 3% were worth more than the remaining 97%
combined.
Scott Groves is an Australian success coach who 'walks his
talk.' Here, he details a process of overcoming fears,
limiting beliefs and subconscious images. He shows the ways
to free your mind and move forward, avoiding the traps of
common fears and doubts. Anyone can do this and you are
never too old or too young to start. "We are born goal
seeking organisms. Our minds have the ability to bring into
reality that which is consistent with our subconscious
conditioning. Goal setting has nothing to do with where you
are coming from or what happened to you in the past. What
really matters is the direction you are going from this day
on."
The book is structured to take you through a series of
self-examining exercises. The crucial What, Why, How
formula for setting goals is explained. The author asks you
to focus on What you want and Why you want it, to free you
from the How which can sabotage you if given priority.
He encourages daily visualisation of your goals to make them
brilliantly bold and clear, as well as reminding ourselves
Why we want them. We can want things all day long but it's
the emotions that drive the subconscious. "What
you have in your heart, you can hold in your hand."
Prioritising, planning, beliefs, action and self-talk are
covered, as are his three golden rules for success: pay full
price, pay in advance, enjoy the rewards.
This is very readable and peppered with pithy quotes and
personal anecdotes to inspire you - a genuine blueprint for
successful goal setting that is practical and do-able. The
author has put plenty of sincere wisdom and experience into
this book - a quality product.

Psycho-Cybernetics, A New Way to Get More Living Out of Life . Maxwell Maltz.
Dr Maltz wrote a pile of books in the early 1960s centred round his theory of psycho-cybernetics. Basically, it's about how we construct our own self-image, and then adhere to the parameters of that self-image, even if it's overly restrictive or downright wrong. He maintains that to improve their lives people need only reconstruct their view of themselves along the lines of whom and what they want to be. In a nutshell, before people can change, they must see themselves differently.
He's right, of course, and his books make for fascinating reading from the point of view of a plastic surgeon looking at human psychology. His explanation of the human body as, “an automatic goal-seeking machine which steers its way to a target or goal by use of feedback data and stored information, automatically correcting course when necessary,” is pretty mind-numbing. He means to remind us that we're programmed to succeed, no matter what the goal. We just have to focus on a more worthy target.
You may have heard his theory explained elsewhere as being evidence of the Reticular Activation System (RAS). This is the function of an area in the brain that alerts us when it receives input relating to our goals. For example, you want to buy a new car of a particular brand and colour. Suddenly, you see them everywhere. This is your RAS working for you – powerful stuff when you harness it.
The writing style is quaintly male-centric, in keeping with its vintage. However, he enthusiastically tells interesting, illustrative stories that support his theories. Dr Maltz asserts, “It doesn't matter how many times you have failed in the past. What matters is the successful attempt, which should be remembered, reinforced, and dwelt upon.” Go, Max!

The Richest Man in Babylon: The Original Version, Restored and Revised. George S. Clason.
Written in the 1920s this is a classic story about how to be financially successful. In order to make the author's points more appealing and inspirational, the tale is set in ancient Babylon where money was invented. Artfully written as "a book of cures for lean purses" it weaves together a set of sound financial principles.
Money follows simple rules of its acquisition: Start thy purse to fattening, Control thy expenditures. Make thy gold multiply, Guard thy treasures from loss, Make of thy dwelling a profitable investment, Insure a future income, Increase thy ability to earn. Despite the archaic language, things haven't changed much!
We get to meet some interesting characters to enliven the story. There's Bansir the spendthrift, Algamish the money-lender, Mathon the gold-dealer, Ashtar the goddess of good luck, Tarkar the camel trader, Arkad the richest man in Babylon, plus many hapless souls who serve as examples of how to mishandle money. At the end of each chapter is its moral, in case you missed it.
This is an engaging yarn, full of cautionary tales and commonsense. Like a spoonful of sugar to make the medicine go down, it's an enjoyable way to take in timeless advice.

Saved by the Light: The True Story of a Man Who Died Twice and the Profound Revelations He Received Dannion Brinkley.
In 1975 Dannion Brinkley was hit by lightning while talking on the phone. He was dead for twenty-eight minutes before being revived in hospital. What 'happened' for the duration is recounted here. He tells of visiting a Crystal City where he was met by thirteen Beings of Light who gave instructions and information for his return. Prior to this event, Dannion was a self-confessed bad boy Vietnam veteran with negligible spiritual inclinations. Revived, he was an incoherent, babbling, half-cooked believer in life after death.
He was a changed man in many ways - far less self-absorbed, unnervingly clairvoyant, filled with determination to deliver on his instructions from the other side, and adamant about what he'd experienced, seen and heard. Dannion took to hospice work setting up a non-profit organisation, The Twilight Brigade, to provide comfort, reassurance, and compassionate support to dying war veterans and their loved ones. He believes that if we can dispel our fear of death, we can dispel our fear of life; few know better than he the truth behind that.
In 1989 he underwent surgery on his lightning-damaged heart and again travelled to the Crystal City receiving further information and guidance to be passed on. In 1997 he again had surgery, this time for a brain aneurysm, and had several out-of-body experiences.
Dannion Brinkley is an extraordinary man who relates experiences that defy belief. His second book, At peace in the light, contains stories about his hospice work, while his third book, Secrets of the light , explains his 'spiritual strategies to empower your life.' The last is rich in practical instruction, my personal favourite being that, in any given situation, you should act as if God's busy right now so you were sent instead. While that may sound a little cheesy, it serves to remind us not only of our responsibility to strive to be a blessing to all we encounter, but also that the Divine genuinely needs us to serve as living examples of its love in action on Earth.

The Science of Getting Rich: Attracting Financial Success through Creative Thought Wallace D. Wattles.
Wow! - a metaphysical book first published in 1910 that still makes perfect sense? This is a real treasure, densely packed with earnest wisdom and the utmost confidence that if you follow specific principles becoming rich is a given. Writing with a quiet intensity, Wallace D. Wattles assures you that getting rich is a scientific process in as much as it has a formula, a syllabus, as he calls it.
Each chapter covers an element of the syllabus which is completely built and summarised by the end of this slim (82p) book. Just some of the chapter titles are The First Principle, Gratitude, Thinking in the Certain Way, Acting in the Certain Way, Impressions of Increase , Cautions and Concluding Observations . It suffers from an instructional style, that is, an overuse of words like should, must, do not, right, wrong, never, and always, in keeping with its vintage. This approach disguises what is essentially a faith-based philosophy of wealth creation - Wallace presumes the reader has faith, which might have been true in the early 1900s. His theory is based on acceptance of his ideas of Formless Substance and Thinking Stuff. The secular world of the twenty-noughties struggles to have faith - the belief in things unseen. Personally, I accept his premise but some may not.
The author's intention is sincere; his advice is sound, his explanations clear. In amongst the instructions are words of encouragement and nuggets of wisdom - "When you make a failure, it is because you have not asked for enough; keep on, and a larger thing than you were seeking will certainly come to you. Remember this." He is resolute in his belief in his syllabus and urges you to be equally resolute in the pursuit of riches in your life, whatever that may be for you.
This is the type of book that you can pick up, open at any page and find something that inspires you - "Substance is friendly to you, and is more anxious to give you what you want than you are to get it." I choose to accept this kind of counsel - read Wallace D. Wattles and decide for yourself.

Self Matters: Creating Your Life from the Inside Out . Dr Phillip C. McGraw.
If you don't know what happened, exactly, to turn you into the confused, cynical, unmotivated sad-sack you've become, then read this book. Dr ‘how's that workin' for ya?' Phil takes you through a range of written exercises that explore your inner and outer selves. This requires intense self-scrutiny that proves worthwhile when, at the end, you understand and appreciate yourself better.
He guides you through this often painful journey by training you to question alleged self-truths, while ramping up your self-esteem in the process. There's plenty of psychological jargon but he explains everything carefully. It's a substantial book requiring a healthy slab of commitment to complete.
If you need to understand what makes you tick, this is a good text to choose. It may not change your life immediately, but change on the inside always manifests on the outside - give it a shot.

What Rich People Know & Desperately Want to Keep Secret . Brian Sher.
An Australian business coach, Brian Sher shares his observations on how to be successful in business. He sets out the basics, with the clearest message being, if you want to be wealthy and successful then start your own business, preferably selling ‘widgets' rather than services. He discusses products, marketing, staff and business systems.
With plenty of commonsense advice, this is a very useful and encouraging introduction to business success. Don't be deterred by the overblown title - it really doesn't reflect that this book contains shrewd advice rather than ‘secrets'. There's some real gems in here like, “successful people are those who see themselves as their very own small business.” Well worth a read.

Wishcraft: How to Get What You Really Want . Barbara Sher.
The first half of this book is all about wishing – the all important ‘why' behind everything we do. The second part deals with the craft, or technique, - the ‘how' of making your wishes happen. If you are not sure what it is you want to do with your life then this book takes you through lots of ingenious drilling-down exercises. From the results, the author contends you will get to what you love, your identity, your core – what you really want.
She writes, “this book is not about castles in the air – it's about the nuts and bolts and plans and principles of engineering that get castles built here on earth.” Chapter titles include style search, goal search, brainstorming, and barn-raising. There's plenty of sage advice, practical suggestions and examples to help you work out where you want to go, to make a start, negotiate mental and physical obstacles, and to reach your destination.
Barbara Sher has also published Refuse to choose – use all of your interests, passions and hobbies to create the life of your dreams, Live the life you love in 10 easy step-by-step lessons, and I could do anything if I only knew what it was – great titles for very good books.

The Writings of Florence Scovel Shinn: The Game of Life and How to Play It, Your Word Is Your Wand, The Secret Door to Success, The Power of the Spoken Word, The Secret Door to Success .Florence Scovel Shinn.
It is hard for me to be objective about the work of the remarkable Mrs Shinn. Without lapsing too far into hyperbole, reading her books moved me from ‘zero to hero' in seconds flat. Her opening gambit is, “Most people consider life a battle, but it is not a battle, it is a game.” She first published these words in 1925.
Incorporating four books: The game of life and how to play it, Your word is your wand, The power of the spoken word, and The secret door to success , her Writings open your eyes to the metaphysical side of life. She explains the covert power behind Christian teachings and their incorporation into everyday life. If you are not that way inclined, don't be put off – I'm grateful I wasn't.
Her books cover what she calls the ‘square of life' made up of four elements: health, wealth, happiness and perfect self expression. She counsels you to watch what you think, say and do towards gaining everything you want – “by your words you are justified, by your words you are condemned.”
In a nutshell, she is an early proponent of the adage, ‘fantasise, prioritise, act.'
Since I first read her wise words in 1988, in just about every self-help book I've read since, I've thought, Yep, Florence said that…, while being much simpler and easier to apply, too. There's nothing new under the sun, but the late, great, Florence Scovel Shinn put it the most eloquently.

You Inc. : How to Attract Amazing success Into your life and Business John McGrath.
John McGrath is an Australian real estate agent who started young and built a successful company by dint of hard work, passion and excellent business strategies. He shares his accumulated knowledge in this book, focussing on establishing the right attitude within yourself, then explaining business operations, building your business and its team, then sales and marketing. It's aimed at the business owner (rather than an employee) with a philosophy of constant improvement, in your personal life and in business.
By incorporating useful illustrative stories the author offers plenty of advice and helpful tips on what to do (and what not to do) to be successful. This book follows on from his previous: You don't have to be born brilliant - how to design a magnificent life , which focuses more on personal habits and attitudes - a 'How To' for becoming a consistent high-achiever. If you're thinking about starting a business, or just need some inspiration and guidance to get on track, You Inc. is well worthwhile.
